The Character Creation Process
The Mythmaster character creation process is very straigthforward. All you need to do is open the Character Generator and start making choices. The Character Generator is a fully automated tool designed to make the process of creating a new character fun, fast and accessible. The rules for character creation - essentially a written explanation of what the Character Generator is doing beneath the hood - are included below for experienced players who wish to have a deeper understanding of some of the nuances of the process so they can get better at it.
At the end of the process, once you 'Go Adventuring', you will be able to export the character to a JSON, which can be reloaded into the Character Creator, allowing you to add experience and update your character as you continue to progress them through play.
You can print your character sheet directly from the Character Generator, or you can copy and paste the HTML into this Character Sheet template, that will allow you to edit it more easily during play.
Step By Step
The character creation process is broken down into three main steps, which are outlined below. The different steps of the process reference different sections of the rules as you click through the process, generating random values and making choices as you assign your stats, choose your species, earn skills and acquire assets, and pass through the years of your character’s life. At the end of the process, you will be ready to start adventuring.
Step One: Create Your Initial Character
In the first step of the character creation process you will create your character as they were born; determining their intial stats, attributes and derivatives, and assigning them a species and a gender identity. Here you will also choose some personality traits that define them, and their starting height and weight will be determined automatically.
After the basic vitals are determined, you will roll your character's social status, assign their mother tongue and roll their initial skills from the Basic skill field, and from the starting skill fields for the social status and species.
Once all of this is finished, you will have an initial character who is still a child. From here, you can skip Step Two entirely and choose to Go Adventuring, but you will be very young and inexperienced. More likely, you will want to proceed to Step Two.
Step Two: Iterate Through Life Cycles
In the second step of the character creation process you will iterate through life cycles, experiencing life events. The life events you experience are chosen from a subset of all possible life events based on things such as your stats, your species, and the skill fields you have studied, Because every character is different, the life events you experience will be unique to you, based on the decisions you make as you progress.
Each life event requires you to roll a Challenge using a stat or attribute. The outcomes of these Challenges will determine the results of the life event, and its impact on your progression. Life events can be good, or bad. They can bestow epic boons, or they can result in death, but most of the time, they will have some smaller impact that effects your skills, your stats, your wealth or social status, or your progression within a faction.
After determining the results of your life event, you will have the opportunity to spend earned experience. You can use this experience to increase your stats or derivatives, to buy perks, to purchase skill rolls, or to progress within a faction you have joined. How you choose to spend your earned experience is up to you, and the choices you make will have cascading repercussions.
Increasing your mastery in different skill fields or spell fields will grant bonuses to your stats and derivatives and will unlock perks you can purchase with earned experience points. Increasing your Rank within a faction will similarly grant you bonuses to your stats or derivatives, or additional skill rolls. As you continue to iterate through life cycles, these bonuses will begin to compound, making your character richer and more interesting.
However, each time you iterate through this step you also age. For most species you age 3 years each time you iterate through this step, though the number of years doesn't matter - only the number of iterations through your life cycles matters. This means that species with longer than average lifespans age more years each time they go through this step, and everyone will experience the risks and possible consequences of aging at the same rate.
Starting at Middle Age (following your sixth life cycle - which is age 30 for most species) you will begin experiencing aging events in addition to life events. In the beginning, these are not that bad - and can even be beneficial if you roll well. But every 5 life cycles the aging events get progressively more risky, and you will quickly experience dimishing returns and an increasing risk of severe consequences or instant death. The progress you make with your character over a dozen life cycles can be wiped away by a single bad outcome from an aging event - so be careful.
At one time or another, all of us has dreamed of setting out on a grand adventure and making a name for ourselves, but life itself is often a distraction. Don't let life pass you by... click on that Go Adventuring button before you regret it.
Step Three: Go Adventuring
In the final step of the character creation process you will begin your new life as an adventurer. Once you click the Go Adventuring button in the Character Generator, you will be asked to give your character a name and a description.
At this point, you should export the character to a JSON file, which will save a local copy if it. This JSON file can then be reloaded in the Character Generator. From here you can also added and spend earned experience points, but you cannot return to iterating through life cycles.
You may also wish to print your character. You can do this by printing the webpage, or by copying and pasting the HTML into a spreadheet or other file for easier editting. Here is a spreadhseet template you can use if you wish to move your character to an editable file format that can be exported to a clean and readable pdf for tabletop use.
Once you have version of your character that is printed or editable as a file, you can use your earned assets to purchase weapons, armour and other equipment. Your available assets are shown in the Backstory section at the bottom of your character, along with the history of all your life events. You should also fill in the combat sections of your character sheet by listing your weapons and armour and all the adjusted values for your attacks, defenses and damage rolls. The information needed to complete this section is found in the rules for combat and the combat table.
