Pesky Flies

 

Descending a steep, ruined funicular over a crevasse in a dark cave is dangerous, but doing it with giant spiders lurking above, looking for food, is even more dangerous. Hidden among the rocks, and wrapped and secreted in dusty webs in the receding blackness are three giant spiders. The first person to cross the funicular will alert the spiders. While the second person is crossing, the spiders will attempt to move slowly and silently into position.

CHALLENGE

21C using Alertness (-5)

Once the first person is across, and while the second person is crossing, characters who are actively watching for threats can roll a 21C using Alertness to spot the giant spiders moving into position. The Night Vision perk does not help here, as it allows characters to see in the near infrared spectrum and spiders are cold blooded, so they do not have a distinct heat signature in this environment.

Tactics

If the spiders remain undetected, they will all be in range to attack with their webbing when the third character is in the middle of the crossing. They will all attack at once, attempting to entangle the character on the funicular multiple times (this character can resist being entangled normally, but still needs to roll a 21C using Agility every turn to move at 1/10th of their move).

If any character becomes entangled 3 or more times, the next turn, one spider will drop in and try to carry the entangled character away, while the remaining spiders will engage characters at the top and bottom of the funicular. The escaping spider can move at its climb move along the walls and ceiling, and once it is far enough away, it will attempt to web the captured character more, and envenom them, before returning to help the others.

Anyone entangled and carried up into the crevasse will be hung from a web right next to the corpse of Corinne Gelgu for later eating.
