Oberschi States
All of continental Obersch is a part of the Queendom of Obersch, which is the largest nation state on Tear by area when its holdings in Golanicja and Grscholt Island in the Sea of Oberch are included.
Queendom of Obersch
In the 15th century, the Queendom of Obersch is the largest nation state on Tear. It is a monarchy ruled by an unbroken hereditary line of ursan Matriarchs that was first legally recognized in 404 when Matriarch Irmgard Eisfaust signed the Treaty of Gojod with King Torbjorn I, recognizing the Queendom as a distinct ursan nation. Documents support the claim that the Queendom held recognized authority across mainland Obersch as far back as 400 BCB, and tradition (supported by oral history and earthworks) suggest that it existed in a defacto sense as early as 1400 BCB, making it the oldest nation state on Tear as supported by evidence.
For most of its existence, the Queendom was isolationist, and entirely constrained to Continental Obersch. The ursan Matriarchs never expressed expansionist intentions, but with the orcish invasions, Oberschi forces were sent across the sea of Obserch by way of the largely unpopulated Grscholt Island in the Sea of Obesrch in 396 to contribute to the liberation of Hashuin. This fact, combined King Torbjorn I's obsession with defining which nation owned which land led to the inclusion of Grscholt Island as a holding of the Queendom when the Treaty of Gojod was signed.
After the orcish conquests were ended, the Queendom returned to its isolationist stance and did not exert much influence for another three centuries until again, in 709, their spriggan allies in Kashdush called for their help. Wary of Golanicjan expansionism, the spriggans convinced the Queendom to invade Golanicja via the Shaded Coast in order to force the aggressive King Gaelan to fight on two fronts and prevent him from invading Kashdush. The invasion of Golanicja was sudden and effective, and the entire Shaded Coast region was captured in less than two years, forcing King Gaelan to halt his expansions and refocus his efforts on developing and exploiting the the holdings he had seized in Kash-Odesh.
The Shaded Coast region of north eastern Golanicja would never be returned to the Golanicjan Crown and would remain a province of the Queendom of Obersch even after the collapse of the Kingdom of Golanicja in 1200.
While much of Obserch is rugged, untamed wilderness, none of it is wilderness in the legal sense, meaning that every centimeter of the continent of Obersch, of the Shaded Coast Region of Golanicja and of Grscholt Island is considered part of the jurisdiction of the Queendom of Obersch, with everything that entails. The Queen of Obserch, who is always a female ursan from the same lineage, has absolute power to make and enforce law and to appoint whoever she chooses to any position of power or authority she sees fit. In practice, almost all Oberschi Queens have been calm, rational and benevolent people who have historically surrounded themselves with wise, moderate advisors - many of whom were not ursan. Most Obesrchi cities have a strong city government administered by councils selected from the Great Houses of their respective regions whose members are approved by the Queen. These councils are granted considerable autonomy administer their lands and holdings on behalf of the Crown.
