Goods And Services
The life of an adventurer is never predictable, and it pays to be prepared. Unfortunately, it also costs money to be prepared, and the weapons, armour, and equipment you will need to have success while adventuring can be very expensive. On top of that, the world is a big place, and travelling long distances is also expensive - whether you're roughing it on foot through the wilderness, or travelling by road on horseback, you're going to need food, water and supplies. If you plan to hire a carriage and travel from town to town and stay in inns where it is safe, the prices are even higher. Sometimes, the kinds of adventures you can afford are the kinds of adventures you need to seek.
Prices and Haggling
In most pre-industrial societies, production costs fluctuate significantly, and fixed prices are rare or non-existent. Haggling is thus a normal method of closing most financial transactions. Base prices for many common services and items may not be posted by vendors, and may vary based on supply and demand.
In general, wherever a price is listed, it should be considered a reference price for new items in a context where supply and demand are in reasonable balance. If demand is higher or supply is low, prices can many time higher. In the inverse situation, the prices may fall significantly also.
Used items can normally be acquired for an adjusted base cost of 70% of the list prices, but will be susceptible to breakage or have penalties to use. Used items or items recovered as loot can be sold to vendors for an adjusted base cost of 20% of these prices, depending on quality and wear and tear.
A player can always accept to pay the price initially offered by the vendor, or they can choose to haggling for a better price. Haggling can be resolved quickly by simply rolling a vsC of Haggling skills, or by role-playing.
If the player and director wish to roleplay their haggling instead of rolling dice, the director should start with an initial sale price 50% higher than the prices listed in this Chapter, and should offer to purchase used items at only 10% of these prices.
