Crafting Examples

Included here are a few examples of different weapons and equipment that could be commissioned or crafted, along with specifics about the skill of the craftsperson required to do the work, as well as time and cost.

    Example: a Homemade Long Sword
  • A player character is a Companion in the Trades Skill Field and has a 14 Blacksmithing Skill
  • The character's family operates a full functional forge and smithy
  • They decide to make a long sword that gives +1 to Fast Attack Damage and +1 to Strong Attack Damage.
  • The total bonus for this weapon is +2
  • A normal long sword costs $125, so the Base Labour Time is ($125 / 4) / $8/hr = 4 hours.
  • The Total Crafting Time is (2+1)^2 x 4 = 36 hours
  • Because they are living and working at home while doing this work, the weapon is considered homemade, halving the cost, so the Total Crafting Cost is 2^(2+1) x $125 x 0.5 = $500
  • However, since a player is doing the crafting, they need to make a Skill Roll; failure means starting from scratch.

    Example: a Silvered Mace
  • A priest is anticipating combat with some undead, and commissions a silvered mace with +2 to Strong Attacks, and +4 to Strong Attack Damage.
  • Unfortunately, the maximum bonus possible for a silvered weapon is +5, so the priest agrees to accept a silvered mace with +1 to Strong Attacks, and +4 to Strong Attack Damage.
  • While the bonus being commissioned is only +5, a Grandmasterum in the Trades Skill Field with a 21 Skill in Blacksmithing is required to craft a weapon with a bonus of +4 on a single property
  • A normal mace costs $125, a silvered mace costs $250 so the Base Labour Time is ($250 / 4) / $8/hr = 8 hours.
  • The Total Crafting Time is longer because the weapon is silvered; (5+3)^2 x 8 = 512 hours, or 13 weeks
  • The Total Crafting Cost is 2^(5+1) x $250 = $16,000

    Example: Faster, Stronger Armour
  • A spy planning a dangerous infiltration wants more protection.
  • They commission an extremely expensive suit of leather armour with +2 Protection, +2 Dodge versus Fast Attacks and +2 Dodge versus Strong Attacks.
  • The total bonus for this armour is +6, and the Spy will need to find and hire a Grandmaster craftsperson with at least a 21 Letheworking skill.
  • Normal leather armour costs $750, so the Base Labour Time is ($750 / 4) / $8/hr = 23.5 hours.
  • The Total Crafting Time is (6+1)^2 x 23.5 = 1150 hours, or about 28 weeks of work; so half a year.
  • The Total Crafting Cost is 2^(6+1) x $750 = $96,000

    Example: the Finest Rapier
  • A man seeks revenge against a Count who murdered his father over an exquisite rapier that the Count commissioned - it must be very expensive to kill for.
  • The rapier offers +4 to Fast Attacks, +2 Block versus Fast Attacks and +2 Block versus Strong Attacks - truly a blade without equal.
  • The total bonus for this weapon is +8; the man’s father must have been a Grandmaster.
  • A normal rapier costs $175, so the Base Labour Time is ($175 / 4) / $8/hr = 5.5 hours.
  • The Total Crafting Time is (8+1)^2 x 5.5 = 445 hours, or 11 weeks
  • the Total Crafting Cost is 2^(8+1) x $175 = $89,600

    Example: Preparing Boots for Enchanting
  • A wealthy ranger wants to be able to move more quickly, and plans to commission Boots of Speed.
  • To ‘prepare’ a pair of boots to be enchanted with this spell they must be crafted to have a bonus of +3.
  • A normal pair of rugged boots cost $100, so the Base Labour Time is ($100 / 4) / $8/hr = 3 hours.
  • The Total Crafting Time is (3+1)^2 x 3 = 48 hours, or 6 days.
  • The Total Crafting Cost is 2^(3+1) x $100 = $1600.
  • These boots have no actual bonus, but are now ready to be enchanted.

    Example: Preparing a Focus Crystal
  • Our wealthy ranger also wants to be able to use the Speed spell on the boots at will, for no Casting Cost.
  • This will require a Fine Gem to be crafted to hold a bonus of +3, which will require an Master Artisan with a Jeweler skill of at least 19.
  • The base cost for a Fine Gem with a potential bonus of +3 is $3,000
  • Base Labour Time is ($3000 / 4) / $8/hr = 93.75 hours
  • The Total Crafting Time is (3+1)^2 x 62.5 = 1500 hours, or about 37.5 weeks of work
  • the Total Crafting Cost is 2^(3+1) x $3000 = $48000
  • The ranger has now spent $49,600 on boots and a gem that do nothing. So far.
