Wyvern
Select Subtype:
Description:
Wyverns are related to dragons, but they are smaller, and more animal-like in their general behaviours. Wyverns have been known to be tamed to serve as flying steeds and even to carry their riders into mounted combat, but training a wyvern is a deadly task, usually best suited to the undead who can't be poisoned, but sometimes also undertaken by ruthless warlords or necromancers with no regard for life of decency. A wyvern mount can carry 150 Bulk.
Wyverns have long, serpentine bodies and bat-like wings, and a long, whip-like tail with a sharp, venomous stinger at the tip. They have the powerful hind legs and claws of other dragon-kind, but their forelegs are small and unwieldy, and only serve to manipulate food while they are eating - thus their claw attack is only possible while airborne.
Special:
Wyverns are fast and agile, and they will use their speed to control the flow of movement in combat. They will typically try to remain aloft, even if engaged in combat with enemies on the ground - thus enabling them to attack with their powerful hind claws.
Variants:
Standard Wyvern
Standard wyverns are most often encounted in remote mountainous regions, periodically appraching the outskirts of civilization in search of food. If captured and trained, these can be ridden as mounts.
War Wyvern
War wyverns are very rare, and most of the legendary accounts have them flying as elite air cavalry in service of a significant undead army raised by a lich, mummy, vampire or powerful necromancer. A draugr or a wraith mounted on a wyvern is a terrible and terrifying thing to behold.
