Description:

Gargoyles are enchanted architectural elements that remain permanently affixed to the structures they are assigned to protect. They cannot move from their position, and function primarily as static security, using their senses and their spells to secure the structure, deter trespassers, and to alert guards who can respond to physically repel intruders.

Special:

Distinguishing ordinary architectural gargoyles from enchanted ones can be done by actively using Magic Sense to observe them to determine if they are magical. A 21C using the Architecture skill can also detect that an enchanted gargoyle is not merely an ordinary architectural feature. Otherwise unless they are observed casting a spell, they generally cannot be distinguished from simple decoration.

Variants:

Gargoyles come in different shapes and sizes, and are always created in the same architectural style as the structures they defend. Generally, larger gargoyles are for exterior security, while smaller gargoyles are for protecting interiors.

Buttress Gargoyle

Gargoyles mounted on exterior buttresses or other large structural features tend to be mounted high above the ground where they can easily observe the main approaches to the structure, providing 360 degrees of coverage. These gargoyle will use their spells to prevent trespassers from approaching the strutcure and will alert living guards to respond to intruders who persist.

Pilaster Gargoyle

Gargoyles mounted on smaller structural or decorative elements like pillars or pilaster can be found both inside and outside of buildings. They tend to be positioned so as to monitor secondary entrances, or major corridors or large rooms within buildings.

Cornice Gargoyle

These small gargoyles are usually mounted on cornices or doorframes within important individual rooms to detect intruders who have already penetrated the outer defenses and are attempting to access critical areas, or are evading guards who might be searching for them.
