Dog
Select Subtype:
Description:
Dogs - both wild and domestic - have a range of different sizes and appearances. Smaller, solitary individuals tend not to be a threat, but larger animals, or groups of them hunting in packs are very dangerous. Wild dogs are opportunistic hunters and scavengers, and prefer to avoid a stand-up fight - they will attack weaker prey, but will avoid stronger prey, or stalk it if sick or wounded until it is more vulnerable.
Special:
Wild dogs are very skilled hunters, but they are also savvy survivors, and they will not usually engage prey unless they are highly confident they can win.
Variants:
Dogs are unique in that they have been domesticated and bred to serve humanoids in a wide range of different capacities, and many of the dogs that will be encountered will be domesticated working dogs or pets.
Domestic Hunting Dog
Hunting dogs are dogs that have been trained to use their exceptional sense of smell help humanoids locate and run down prey.
Domestic Terrier
Terriers are small dogs that are trained to hunt and kill rats, mice and other small vermin. Their small size and agility, combined with their excellent sense of smell make them effective hunters of these small pests, but they are also likely to become exposed to vermin-borne diseases.
Domestic Toy Dog
Toy dogs are domesticated and bred for their cute characteristics, such as humanoid like faces and expressions and particular colours or patterns. They are often sickly due to inbreeding, and they may be aggressive sue to be being coddled - but this does not make them dangerous.
Domestic War Dog
War dogs have been trained to accompany soldiers into battle. They are paricularly fearless, and clever and will seek out allied troops engaged in melee combat, and attempt to bring down their opponents by grappling or slamming them. They will also attempt to bring down mounted units.
Coyote
Coyotes are solitary hunters and scavengers who will observe potential prey for a long time before taking the risk of an attack. They are timid and will avoid a fight, and they are happy to go for sick or weak prey - which makes them susceptible to contracting different diseases.
Jackal
Jackals are small scavengers who roam in small family packs, looking to steal other animals kills. Individually a jackal is not much of a threat, but a group of them defending a meal can be dangerous.
Wolf
Wolves are the most dangerous of all wild dogs. They hunt in packs - sometime numbering over a dozen. A single wolf is a serious threat to a lone humanoid - even one who is combat trained - but a pack of hungry wolves can work togther to take down even very large and formidable prey.
