Description:

Cats can be found in almost any biome. They are excellent hunters and will attempt to stalk their prey when possible. Cats of all kinds almost always strike with surprise and will attempt to grapple with their jaws and attack with their claws, making them efficient killing machines. Unless very hungry, cats will often retreat if detected rather than push a frontal attack, and will retreat if injured.

Special:

Cats can see in near total darkness. If possible, predator cats will use their Stalk ability to observe their prey before attacking. Once engaged in combat, they use their extreme speed and incredible reflexes to their advantage.

Variants:

Domestic

Domestic cats are usually kept as mousers, protecting the home or farm from invasions of rodents or other vermin. They can also be kept as pets, and if well cared for and fed, will be very friendly. Different individuals have a wide range of colours, patterns and sizes.

Cheetah

The fastest of all land animals, cheetahs can reach sprinting speeds up to 130 km/h. They are skilled at stalking and pouncing, but they are smaller and lighter than most predator cats and must focus on smaller prey. Their spotted coats provide excellent camouflage in the grasslands and scrublands where they live. They can also be found in open woodlands and dry forests, but will not venture into dense forest or jungle where the advantage of their extreme speed is impaired.

Jaguar

Jaguars are large, dangerous predators with powerful jaws. Their coats have similar spotted patterns to those of cheetahs or leopards, but they are stronger than either, and nowhere near as fast as cheetahs. Some jaguars will have an all black coat, and may be called 'panthers' colloquially. They can be found in grasslands, mountains, forests and jungles.

Leopard

Leopards are similar to jaguars, but somewhat smaller. They have patterned coats similar to those of jaguars, and may also be referred to as 'panthers' if their coats are pure black. They can be found in grasslands, mountains, forests and jungles.

Lion

Lions are massive predators able to bring down the largest prey. Males have big manes, while females do not. Lions are lazy, and will work in family groups called prides to bring down large kills and share them. Lions can be found in open woodlands and dry forests, but not in dense forest or jungle.

Lynx

Lynx, and their close cousins, bobcats are the smallest of the predator cats. They are still dangerous, and can easily kill a humanoid - especially if able to stalk and attack with surpise. Lynx are found in taiga, and boreal and subalpine forests.

Puma

Pumas, also known as mountain lions or cougars, are medium to large predators similar in appearance to female lions, but significantly smaller. They can be found in grasslands, mountains, forests and deserts.

Tiger

The largest and deadliest of all predator cats, tigers are enormously powerful. Their intelligence and their ability to stalk thier prey make them a threat even to animals or monsters significantly larger than they are - a surprise attack from a stalking tiger is likely instant death for an ordinary humanoid. Tigers can be found in wide range of environments including grasslands, forests, jungles, and swamps, as well as in mountainous and cold regions including taiga, and boreal and subalpine forests.
