Leptid
Description:
Leptids have silvery scales and long, fish-like bodies with long, thin arms and legs and wide webbed feet. They love to hunt humanoids, and many a fishing vessel has been found adrift, with Leptid footprints all over the blood soaked decks.
Leptids typically insert themselves into schools of tuna, halibut or other prized fish as a school of them gather around a target ship before attacking. When a large enough number of them have gathered, they pick up speed, leaping from the water alongside the ship like dolphins, until they are able to extend their legs and begin running on water - they can run along the surface of the water at their swim speed - and from there, can typically bound up on to the deck of most ordinary seagoing vessels.
Leptids prefer to attack with an advantage of two or three to one, and they have a pretty good understanding of the crew compliments of typical sailing vessels in the waters where they hunt. While they are intelligent tool users, they speak no known languages, and have never been known to take prisoners.
Special:
When a Leptid is swimming at full speed in a straight line, they can make a 21 Challenge versus their Base Stat to begin running on water - this still counts as ‘swimming’, and they maintain their swim movement - they must make the 21 Challenge every turn to continue running on water. While running on water they can leap up to 3 hexes (6 meters) up onto the deck of a ship. They will typically wait for several Leptids to be running so they can all jump aboard a ship at once - these few turns of co-ordinating are often the only warning crews get that they are about to be attacked.
A Leptid can expend a point of Stamina to spray its toxic spittle to a range of up to 6 hexes. It takes several minutes of rest for Leptids to generate enough of this spittle to project it in this way, so they can only use it once in any given encounter.
